Public Broadcasters – where to from here? seminar



In an increasingly multi-channelled and fragmented digital media landscape, where do we see the role of public broadcasters, primarily as reporters of news and current affairs?

Our panel will examine the issues surrounding public broadcasters in Australia, contrasting them with other comparable jurisdictions, from their origins and charters to their emerging role in the 21st century.

Join us and the panel for an interactive discussion on these issues, with panellists:

Mark Armstrong: Director, Network Insight Institute
Mark Armstrong is the Director the Network Insight Institute.
His earlier roles included: Chair of the ABC Board, Chair of the Broadcasting Council, and Member of the Broadcasting Council. Over 10 years at the UNSW law school, he pioneered teaching of media and communications law courses and also wrote books in those fields.

Jonathan Holmes: media columnist, The Age and former presenter, Media Watch (ABC TV)
Jonathan Holmes has been a television journalist and documentary-maker for almost 45 years.
For five years, from 2008, Jonathan presented the influential weekly television program Media Watch.
In July last year he retired from the ABC and is now a regular columnist on media matters for The Age and (occasionally) the Sydney Morning Herald.

Jock Given: Professor of Media and Communications, The Swinburne Institute, Swinburne Uni of Technology
Jock Given is Professor of Media and Communications at Swinburne University’s Institute for Social Research.
He researches, writes and teaches about communications policy, business, law and history and is leading a research project ‘Spreading Fictions – Distributing Stories in the Online Age’. Jock previously worked as Director of the Communications Law Centre and Policy Advisor at the Australian Film Commission.

Richard Finlayson: Director of Television, ABC
Richard Finlayson joined the ABC as Director of Television in 2013. He has worked in media since 1985, beginning his career as a print journalist in regional NSW. He has built and sold his own successful media and TV production business, and worked for some years in subscription television.
